NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATE
February 20, 2020
WHAT IS NOVEL CORONAVIRUS?
There are many types of coronaviruses. A new strain was found in Wuhan, China that has caused serious illness. It is now named COVID-19. In the United States there are 15 known cases with one and possible two cases in Wisconsin.
♦ The risk to Vernon County residents is low at this time. ♦
WHO IS AT RISK FOR COVID-19?
♦ People who have recently traveled to China.
♦ People in close contact with someone who has COVID-19.
Remember, viruses do not discriminate based on race or nationality, and neither should we.
WHAT IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC?
The Health Department is working with experts from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor COVID-19. Travelers are being screened at airports and processes are in place to monitor those at risk. Those people at risk are being kept separate from others (quarantine) until monitoring show they are not at risk of getting COVID-19 and can return to their regular activities.
INFLUENZA IS A BIGGER RISK
Protect yourself from getting sick by:
♦ Washing your hands often ♦ Covering your mouth and nose when coughing
♦ Staying home if you are sick ♦ Avoiding others who are sick
Contact your health care provider if you have concerns.
