Access Road

An access road and cattle lanes are built up areas that provide for better travel of Farm Equipment or Cattle. Roads are typically designed to minimize erosion and increase the ease of moving around to key locations on the farm. Roads and Lanes typically have a certain depth of specific sized rock and gravel. Cattle lanes normally have lime screenings as a protective hoof contact area. Areas with wetter soils or with very heavy, regular traffic may also include Geotextile fabric underneath to help further stabilize the Road or Lane and to prevent the rock from sinking into the soil.

If you have need for this conservation practice, please work with our department well in advance (a year or more) so we can help plan, design, and hopefully assist with funding for this practice on your farm.
