Hazmat

The Vernon County Hazardous Materials Response team was formed in 1997 as a level B team. Since then the State has reorganized the team layouts and Vernon County is now a Type III team and is considered a State asset.

The Type III Team which is part of the Southwest Wisconsin Hazardous Materials Taskforce for Type III teams, in a Four County consortium with Crawford, Richland, and Iowa Counties.  Vernon County is the lead county, with the equipment being stored in Viroqua. A division of the team is in Iowa County with equipment also. The team is comprised of Technician level and Operations level members.  In Vernon County there are twenty Hazmat Technicians, with four members of the team serving as team leaders.  The team members are from various fire departments in the county. In Iowa County there are ten Hazmat Technicians, with two members of the team serving as team leaders.  The team members are from various fire departments in the county. The Emergency Management Director has overall direction of the Team.
