Before the Department of Human Services was created in Vernon County, two government programs, Unified Board and Social Services, existed as separate agencies to provide services to the community. Unified Board served people of the community with mental health and long term needs. Located in downtown Viroqua, Social Services served the community in Economic Support Services and Child Welfare Services. In 1981 the two agencies relocated to the Erlandson Building in Viroqua but remained as separate agencies. In 1988 Unified Board and Social Services combined resources to become the Department of Human Services. The Department of Human Services provides assistance in the areas of Economic Support, Long Term Support, and Family and Children’s Services.
