Traffic

The Traffic Division of the Clerk of Court's office handles all traffic, criminal traffic, ordinance, and DNR violations.

Court dates:
Traffic court is held monthly and is generally scheduled for the 1st Tuesday of each month.

Is my appearance required on the date set forth on my citation?

If your citation is marked no appearance required you do not need to appear. Failure to appear will result in a finding of guilt and you will be given 60 days to pay your fine.

If your citation is marked appearance required you must appear. Failure to appear for a mandatory appearance may result in a warrant for your arrest being issued.

Payment:
You may pay for your citation by cash, check, money order, or credit card. Please, do NOT mail cash.

To pay by credit card you should contact Government Payment Service by phone at 1-888-604-7888 or online at: www.govpaynow.com/gps/user/

You may pay your citation at the Clerk of Court’s office or send your payment by mail to Vernon County Courthouse, 400 Courthouse Square, Suite 115, WI 54665. Please, do NOT mail cash. If requested a payment plan may be set up for monthly payments. You must contact the Clerk of Court’s office within 60 days from the finding of guilt to schedule monthly payments.

If I wish to plead not guilty, how do I proceed?
You may enter a not guilty plea in writing or by contacting the Clerk of Court’s traffic division at 608-637-5343. Upon entering a not guilty plea a court trial will be scheduled for a later date.

What is a court trial?
A court trial is a procedure in open court whereby the Judge decides a case based on evidence and arguments provided by the parties.

What happens at a court trial?

Before the scheduled court trial date, you must contact the prosecutor to discuss possible pretrial resolution of the case. Your discussions with the prosecutor are your best opportunity to raise “fairness” issues. If no resolution of the case can be reached the court trial will proceed as scheduled.

If you wish to have a jury trial, you must make your request in writing and pay the jury fee within 10 days from the date to appear on your citation. The fee for a jury trial is $6.00 per juror. (i.e. 6 person jury = $36.00, 12 person jury=$72.00)

Any questions you may have regarding your driving record should be directed to the Department of Motor Vehicles at www.dot.state.wi.us or by calling 608-266-2261.

You should also contact the Department of Motor Vehicles with any questions or inquiries in regard to obtaining an occupational license.
