Nutrient Management

Planning

Nutrient management planning is based on soil type and slope, crop rotations and residual nutrients, and takes both manure and commercial fertilizers into account. The plan includes these elements and is also a way to minimize the risk of contaminating ground and surface waters due to runoff. Nutrient management requires:

  • Soil testing
  • Record-keeping
  • Annual crop management planning according to UW recommendations
  • Meeting state and federal standards

Farmers may work with a crop consultant or advisor to write nutrient management plans.  They may also qualify to write their own plans by successfully completing a training course every four years. Contact Land & Water for Information on available consultants or to find out about taking the class. Free software is available for download. (Snap+ to the left)

Cost-share is often available to help with Soil Sampling and NMP development on a First Come, First Serve Basis. Contact Department for more information.
