Wedding Guidelines and Policies
Weddings should be scheduled with the judicial assistant.  Other staff may schedule courthouse weddings in the absence of the judicial assistant.  Please contact Kristi Christopherson at 608-637-5364 for availability and scheduling.
PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE COURT’S CONTINIOUSLY CHANGING CALENDAR, YOUR WEDDING MAY HAVE TO BE RESCHEDULED TO ANOTHER DATE ON SHORT NOTICE.
Courthouse Weddings

Courthouse weddings will be scheduled for any week day during normal courthouse hours; however, noon is the preferred time.  Weddings will not be scheduled on a day set aside for a jury trial or intake days without the express approval of the judge.

When scheduling a courthouse wedding, you must provide your names and a telephone number where you can be reached during the day.  You will also need to determine whether you will be bringing two adult witnesses with you or whether courthouse personnel will serve as witnesses.

On the day of the wedding, please report to the Register in Probate’s office at least 15 minutes prior to the ceremony.  The marriage license will need to be received by the judicial assistant the day prior to the ceremony.    If the parties wish to cancel the wedding, they are to notify the judicial assistant well in advance.  The court’s calendar is very full, and prior notice of cancellation is well appreciated.

No fee is charged and no fee will be accepted for performing a courthouse wedding.

Other Weddings

The judge prefers not to perform weddings on weekends or week day evenings.  However, exceptions will be made, depending on availability.

If the judge is unavailable to perform a wedding, you may contact the Vernon County Family Court Commissioner, Russ Hanson (634-3956), or Vernon County Court Commissioners, Gary Monson (637-2159), and Tom Fortney (637-3517).  Other judges in neighboring counties are sometimes available.

The typical honorarium for a weekend or evening wedding is $200.

THE CIRCUIT COURT AND STAFF ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE LEGAL ADVICE.
