Coon Valley

The majority of the first settlers came to Coon Valley from Biri, Norway. Even Gullord was the first man know to explore the valley in 1848. The first settler in the valley was Helge Gulbrandson, who came from Muskego in 1849. For more than a year he and his wife were the lone inhabitanbts along with the Indians. Business began with the purchase of 8 acres of land including a waterfall for $150.00, by Henry Johnson and Nils Neprud. They damned up the creek and built a sawmill. The process was very slow as the saw gripped only as it moved down. In 1865 the sawmill was sold to J. Blinn, J. Scheiner and W. Schneider and in 1868 they built a three-story flourmill which immediately prospered and brought business from a large radius. The first store was built and operated by Henry Johnson in 1863. A post office was granted in 1865 and the first blacksmith shop was opened in 1866.

What is a Benefit Specialist?

A Benefit Specialist is a person trained to help older persons who are having problems with their private or government benefits. Benefit Specialists are often called “Red Tape Cutters” because they are experts at helping older persons with the extensive and complicated paperwork that is often required in benefit programs. They help older persons figure out what benefits they are entitled to and tell them what they must do to receive them. Benefit Specialists are continually trained and monitored by attorneys knowledgeable in elder law. The attorneys are also available to assist older persons in need of legal representation on benefit matters.
